Yerevan to Host Unprecedented Serbian-Armenian Music Concert

The vibrant cultural tapestry of Yerevan will soon be enriched by an extraordinary musical event, uniting Serbian and Armenian traditions. On November 12, 2024, at 7:30 PM, the Komitas Chamber Music Hall will host a remarkable concert featuring renowned Armenian pianist Hayk Melikyan. The performance is part of the 1900+ series, which celebrates the 20th-century music of various nations, and will highlight the works of both Serbian and Armenian composers.

This concert, the 21st in the 1900+ series, marks the 30th anniversary of Serbian and Armenian diplomatic relations, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience masterpieces from both countries' rich musical heritages. The program includes works by celebrated Serbian composers Kornelije Stanković, Marko Tajčević, Miloje Milojević, Stevan Mokranjac, Vasilije Mokranjac, Ljubica Marić, and Dejan Despić, as well as Armenian composers Komitas, Alexander Arutiunian, Hayk Melikyan, and Elen Yolchian. Elen Yolchian’s composition, Soghomon, is a tribute to the 155th anniversary of Komitas, with its concert premiere scheduled for this special event on November 12.

Organized by the Embassy of Serbia in Armenia in collaboration with the National Center of Chamber Music, this event underscores the strong cultural ties between Serbia and Armenia.

1900+ was launched in 2009 by Honored Artist of Armenia, pianist Hayk Melikyan. To date, the initiative has presented nearly 20 concerts featuring works by French, Russian, Swiss, Polish, Japanese, German, and other composers. 1900+ aims to introduce Armenian audiences to the 20th-century and contemporary piano music of outstanding composers worldwide, often through pieces that are being performed in Armenia for the first time. In March 2024, Hayk Melikyan was awarded the Gold Medal from Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport in recognition of the project’s 15th anniversary.
