39-ամյա Ջեյկոբ Լեոնն ու 48-ամյա Վալերի Մերդելիելը որոշել են ազատվել իրենց նախկին սիրելիներից‚ այդ պատճառով նրանք որոշել են վարձել մարդասպան: Գործն ավարտին հասցնելու համար զույգը մարդասպանին վճարել է 20 հազար դոլար և Cartier-ի երկու ժամացույց: Սակայն նրանք չգիտեին‚ որ իրենց վարձած մարդասպանն ամենևին էլ մարդասպան չէ‚ ավելին՝ նա ոստիկանության աշխատակից է: Երբ գործարքը կնքվել է‚ ոստիկանության աշխատակիցը կապ է հաստատել 33-ամյա մեգան Վերիկասի և 51-ամյա Մաքս Մաքդենիելի հետ և նրանց առաջարկել կեղծ առևանգում բեմադրել: Այս մասին հաղորդում է Daily Mail-ը:

Սպանության պատճառ են հանդիսացել սերն ու գումարը: Ջեյկոբը չի կարողացել ներել իր նախկին ընկերուհուն՝ բաժանման համար‚ իսկ Վալերին չի ցանկացել կիսել Մաքսի հետ 1.25 մլն դոլարը՝ բաժանումից հետո:
