Չինացի կնոջ ստեղծած կիսամերկ կանանց քանդակները կարծես կենդանի և շնչող լինեն. Դուք պարզապես կապշեք, երբ տեսնեք նրա գլուխգործոցները (Ֆոտոշարք)

Քանդակագործությունը, կերպարվեստի տեսակ է, որը պատկերումները կատարում է ծավալային եռաչափ մարմնավորումներով։

Որպես կանոն քանդակագործությունը պատկերում է մարդուն, սակավ՝ կենդանիներին (անիմալիստական ժանր), ավելի սակավ՝ բնությունը (բնապատկեր) և առարկաներ (նատյուրմորտ)։

Գեղանկարչության ու գրաֆիկայի համեմատ ունենալով գեղարվեստաարտահայտչական ավելի սահմանափակ միջոցներ՝ քանդակագործությունը միևնույն ժամանակ ստեղծում է ծավալների շոշափելի ու իրականակերպ դրսևորումներ և դիտողին հնարավորություն է տալիս պատկերվածն ընկալելու տարբեր դիտակետերից։

Քանդակը սկզբում սովորաբար կերտվում է կավից, պլաստիլինից կամ մոմից, ապա ձուլվում գիպսից (քարակերտ ու փայտակերտ գործերում այդ փուլերը հաճախ զանց են առնվում)։

Գիպսե ձուլածոները կա՛մ ինքնուրույն գոյության իրավունք են ստանում, կա՛մ ծառայում որպես մոդել՝ քանդակը ավելի մնայուն նյութերով (քար, փայտ, մետաղ) մարմնավորելու համար։

Անտիկ շրջանում գրեթե միշտ, հետագայում՝ մերթ-մերթ, մարմարե քանդակները ներկվել են: Մինչև 17-18-րդ դարերը հաճախ ներկվել են նաև փայտաքանդակները։

19-20-րդ դարերի քանդակագործները սովորաբար բավարարվում են նյութի բնական գույնով կամ մենագույն փառապատումով։
