Հարևանները բողոքում էին, որ տնից, որտեղ 11 որդեգրված երեխա կար՝ միշտ լացի ձայներ էին լսվում. Ահա, թե ինչ սարսափելի գաղտնիք բացահայտվեց (Ֆոտոշարք)

Յուրաքանչյուր ընտանիք, որը որոշում է գնալ մանկատուն և մի քանի երեխա որդեգրել, ունի իր պատճառը: Ունևոր, սակայն միայնակ մարդիկ ցանկանում են իրենց փողին լավագույն փոխարինող գտնել, մասնավորապես, որբերին տալ ընտանիք և խնամք: Ամուսնական զույգերը, բախվելով չբերության խնդրին, հաճախ որոշում են, որ որդեգրած երեխաները ոչնչով հարազատներից վատը չեն: Սակայն կան նաև տականքներ, որոնց համար մանկատնից վերցված երեխան նապաստակներից կամ կենդանի խաղալիքներից առավել չեն:

Կարլայլ Սմիթը, ով այս հոդվածի գլխավոր հերոսն է, բոլորովին պատահականորեն ծանոթացել էր Գրեյվել ազգանվամբ ամուսնական զույգի հետ: Հատուկ կարիքներով 11 երեխաներ որդեգրած զույգը ցանկացավ հանգստյան օրերին դայակ վարձել, որպեսզի իրենք կարողանային գնալ հանգստի: Մայքլ և Շարեն Գրեյվելներն Արտաքուստ օրինակելի քաղաքացիներ էին թվում:

Որբերի նկատմամբ նրանք առատաձեռն էին ու հոգատար:

Այս զույգն ուներ բոլոր դրական հատկանիշները որդեգրած երեխաների համար լավ ծնողներ կոչվելու համար:

Ավաղ նրանց տանն ամեն ինչ այլ էր: Սկզբում Կարլայլային զարմացնում էր, թե ինչպես է Շերենը դիմում երեխաներին: Կինն անզգուշությամբ օգտագործում էր «կապիկներ» արտահայտությունը, երբ խոսում էր երեխաների մասին: Իսկ ավելի ուշ զարմացած տղամարդը լսեց, թե ինչպես է խորթ մայրը երեխաներից մեկին հրամայում սենյակ գնալ և փակվել սեփական վանդակում:

Սկզբում Սամիթը մտածեց, թե իրենն այդքանը թվացել է:

Սակայն ճշմարտությունը մտացածինից ավելի սարսափելի էր: Գրեյվելների փոքրիկներն իսկապես ապրում էին վանդակներում, ընդ որում գիշերը նրանց խորթ ծնողներն ամուր կողպում էին նրանց, որպեսզի երեխաները չփախչեն: Կարլայլը չեր հավատում իր ականջներին, երբ Մայքլ Գրեյվելը վստահելով իրեն ասել էր, որ փախուստի դեպքում երեխային կարելի է ճանաչել մատների վրա արված կտրվածքներից:

Խորթ հայրը իսկապես մտածում էր, որ որդեգրած երեխաներին այդպիսով լավ կյանքի է նախապատրաստում: Լսելով այդ բառերը` Սմիթը հասկացավ, որ երեխաները գտնվում են հոգեկան խնդիրներ ունեցող սադիստների ձեռքերում:

Արագ հեռանալով Գրեյվելների տնից` նա միանգամից կապ է հաստատում սոցիալական ծառայությունների հետ: Ցավոք սրտի իշխանությունները դեռ երկար էին ստուգում չարամիտ ամուսինների մասին:

Մի քանի տարի անց, այնուամենայնիվ, դաժան ամուսինները զրկվում են որդեգրած երեխաներից և հայտնվում են ճաղերի հետևում: Իսկ վերջերս ամերիկյան հեռուստաշոուի ընթացքում Գրեյվելների մեծացած երեխաները հանդիպում են իրենց ապագան փրկած մարդու հետ:

Հնարավոր է հենց Կարլայլի շնորհիվ է, որ այդ դեռահասները կարողացան ապրել նորմալ կյանքով:
